Swimming is an activity that is ageless and fun, and also has several health benefits thanks to the 'exercise' involved. While many exercises like cycling and running strengthen only some specific muscles of the body, swimming works on the entire body, toning different muscles simultaneously. The benefits of swimming include physical strength and flexibility, muscular stamina, cardiovascular conditioning, posture correction and weight-loss. But there are certain unspoken rules that are meant to be followed while swimming. MetroMela speaks with Krishnaiah, swimming coach at the Mysore University, for some of these tips...
  • Swimming uses techniques like hand entry, catch, pull, exit and recovery, and also kicking and breathing.
  • Before entering the swimming pool, stretch your arms, shoulders, chest, lower back and legs to loosen up.
  • Follow a plan and a strict schedule for your swimming workout.
  • Don’t swim for more than 15 to 20 minutes at a stretch during the initial stage. It is better to maintain a slow comfortable pace to start off.
  • The duration of training for beginners who are learning to swim for the first time should be 20 to 30 minutes.
  • It is advisable to swim a few laps everyday, using the kickboard to strengthen your hips and legs.
  • Hop up and down in water to improve your breathing skills initially.
  • When you start swimming, remember to keep your head steady and hold your breath.
  • Unless you are comfortable in the water, do not go deeper than your chest.
  • The Freestyle (front crawl) is the easiest and safest style of swimming for beginners.
  • Make sure that a trained swimmer is always at hand, to help you out in an emergency in the pool and also during training.
  • For each stroke, extend your hand as far as possible as this would help you to move smoothly.
  • Tilt your head forward as you move through the water and try to keep the water, level in front of you.
  • Make sure you practice regularly because it is the only way to improve your skills and to swim better.
  • Stay away from drugs, alcohol and tobacco; make sure you consume healthy food.
